Residents Join HIKMA Foundation For Garissa Township Cleanup Exercise

Garissa – Local residents, in collaboration with the HIKMA Foundation and other partners, took to the streets today to clean up the Garissa town as part of the prelude to this year’s World Wetlands Day commemorated on Friday.

Organized by the County Department of Environment and spearheaded by Director Mulki Dekow, the cleanup initiative brought together civil servants from both National and County governments, a team from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), representatives from public health, and personnel from partner organizations.

Together, they swept and collected garbage along the bustling Kismayu road and the main market in Garissa Township.

Mr. Mulki, addressing the participants after the successful exercise, called upon all residents, businesses, and corporate organizations to join forces in adopting environmental conservation measures and keeping Garissa town clean.

“The cleanup demonstrates the power of community collaboration for a cleaner environment. Let us all remember that our collective efforts are vital for the well-being of our town,” she expressed.

Mrs. Mulki said a clean environment is a crucial first step towards progress, promoting good health within the community.

“Residents, businesses, and corporate organizations, your participation is crucial. A clean environment is not just a responsibility; it’s a prerequisite for progress and the foundation of good community health,” emphasized Mrs. Mulki in her address to the participants.

“The success or exercise today shows what we can achieve when we unite for a common cause,” she said.

Suleiman Abdikadir who participated in the excercise said a collective approach where all community members get involved in the movement will help conserve the environment.

He said although the cleanup effort is praiseworthy, having incentives and financial investments remains critical.

“These investments would not only bring about a change in how lands and oceans are exploited but also contribute to research, education, and inspiring a collective movement among people, businesses, and governments by highlighting success stories,” he said.

Mrs. Mulki urged volunteers and community members to remain committed for a sustained progress to be achieved and adoption of environmental conservation measures for a clean and healthy town.

Area Chief Salat Mohamed, Garissa Township Ward Administrator Shaciya Hambe, and other community leaders attended the clean up excercise. They have committed to fostering a cleaner and healthier environment in Garissa County, paving the way for positive strides in community well-being and sustainable development.

Garissa County has set an inspiring example of communal collaboration, the cleanup serves as a key avenue for the realization of a cleaner and healthier environment, contributing to community well-being and sustainable development.

The activities will culminate on World Wetlands Day, where the global community reflects on the importance of wetlands and their role in preserving biodiversity and sustaining the planet.
