Civil Servants Join HIKMA Foundation for Garissa Township Cleanup exercise 

Garissa – Ahead of World Wetlands Day on Friday, February 2nd, 2024, Township residents, volunteers and government employees joined hands with the HIKMA Foundation and other partners for a comprehensive town cleanup.

Organized by the County Department of Environment and orchestrated by Director Mulki Dekow, the cleanup initiative witnessed active participation from both National and County government staff, a dedicated team from the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), representatives from public health, and personnel from partner organizations. 

The collective efforts focused on sweeping and collecting garbage along the bustling central Bussiness district in Garissa Township Constituency. 

Director Mulki, expressing her gratitude after the successful exercise, urged all residents, businesses, and corporate organizations to collaborate in adopting environmental conservation measures and maintaining the cleanliness of Garissa town. 

“Ridding the town of filth is the first step towards progress, as a clean environment promotes good health,” emphasized Mulki.

Volunteer environmentalists, while commending the cleanup effort, highlighted the need for broader incentives and financial investments to achieve the necessary scale of restoration. 

Suleiman Abdikadir who participated in the excercise said a collective approach where all community members get involved in the movement will help conserve the environment.

The clean up initiative attracted top government officials, including Area Chief Salat Salat, joined hundreds of residents for the initiative on Friday. 

Garissa County has set an inspiring example of communal collaboration, the cleanup serves as a key avenue for the realization of a cleaner and healthier environment, contributing to community well-being and sustainable development.

The activities will culminate on World Wetlands Day, where the global community reflects on the importance of wetlands and their role in preserving biodiversity and sustaining the planet.
