Meet Yunis Dekow: Journey of a Kenyan Somali Journalist

 

Yunis Dekow is a seasoned journalist and media strategist with over a decade of experience in news and media planning, production, management, and distribution for local and international outlets. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, he is the head and founder of Royal Halann, a prominent video and audio production, public relations, and media strategy firm.

Yunis has held key roles including Program Consultant at CNCPT CREATIVE, overseeing Kenya projects and delivering engaging communication materials using audio/visual and design solutions. Previously, he served as Broadcast and Digital Editorial Director for Dalsan Media Group in Mogadishu, leading production and anchoring of radio, television, and digital newscasts.

His extensive background includes work with prestigious organizations like the Africa Union and the United Nations, where he served as a Public Press Information Officer for various missions in Somalia. In Somaliland, Yunis was Chief Content Officer and Service Editor at CBA TV, pioneering English broadcasting from Hargeisa.

At Radio Midnimo, Yunis revamped editorial approaches, focusing on local content creation and multimedia projects that showcase Somali culture and innovators in Northern Kenya. Earlier, he excelled as Senior Editor and Show Host at Star FM, leading day-to-day operations, developing special programs, and producing compelling documentaries.
