DG Ahmed Muhumed Urges Urgent Action on Climate Resilience Partnerships Alignment

How Can Climate Resilience Partnerships Align for Greater Impact?

Non-state actors have been urged to align their programs with Wajir County in efforts to bolster resilience, promote sustainable resource management, and empower local communities to adapt to the evolving climate reality.

Ahmed Muhumed, the Deputy Governor of Wajir, emphasized that partners should continue their regular programming on climate adaptation, resilience mechanisms, and support for sustainable livelihoods, especially for smallholder farmers and livestock keepers.

Climate change presents significant challenges to Wajir, a region already contending with arid conditions and frequent droughts. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, and prolonged dry spells exacerbate water scarcity, impacting agriculture, livestock rearing, and overall livelihoods.

Consequently, communities in Wajir face heightened vulnerability to food insecurity, economic instability, and displacement due to climate-related events.

With a majority of the 780,000 population being ethnic Somali pastoralists, Wajir County grapples with climate challenges.

Mr. Ahmed Aato called on partners to meet halfway in implementing the county’s long-term development blueprint during a meeting with a delegation from Mercy Corps hosted in Wajir.

The discussions mainly focused on sectors such as the commercialization of livestock, commercial agriculture, and financial inclusion for Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), according to a dispatch from the office of the Deputy Governor.

With a proven track record in creating opportunities and enhancing the efficiency of camel milk trade, Mercy Corps’ collaboration promises significant benefits for the local community.

A collaborative effort has been initiated, involving existing approaches and technology platforms, aimed at developing tailored program strategies to increase the adoption and dissemination of climate-smart rangeland management information.

Deliberations also highlighted the importance of addressing underlying challenges such as climate change, water security, natural resource management, and access to energy.

The efforts are crucial in supporting people in fragile areas to adapt to new risks while fostering long-term community and economic transformation.
