‪Egypt To Reevaluate GERD Water Management negotiations with Ethiopia ‬

Cairo – Egypt is reevaluating its water management plan and is set to engage in renewed discussions regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).

These discussions aim to secure a “legal” agreement on operating the dam despite four rounds of talks, two in Cairo and two in Addis Ababa failing.

Egypt cites “Ethiopian intransigence” as a hindrance to successful negotiations, expressing hope that Addis Ababa will exhibit the political will needed for a binding agreement.

The environmental and humanitarian stakes are high, with warnings against an escalation of the crisis.

Egypt and Sudan insist on a binding legal agreement to regulate the dam’s filling and operation, concerned about potential reductions in water supplies and other adverse effects. Ethiopia defends its right to development and energy generation.
