Equip Journalists Appropriately to Report Graft, Crime: MCK

Mombasa – The Media Council of Kenya CEO David Omwoyo says equipping journalists with the right skills and requisite equipment remain critical  in the fight against corruption.

He says empowered journalists can be effective contributors to awareness creation around the vice. 

“Journalists need the right skills and equipment to report on crime and governance issues”, he said at an Anti-Corruption workshop for crime and governance journalists organised by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in Mombasa.

He called for enhanced collaboration between the media, EACC and government in the fight against graft in the country.

Mr Omwoyo also encouraged media houses to embrace the digital transformation by adopting innovative strategies that address their sustainability.

Chief of Staff and Head of The Public Service Felix Koskei affirmed the Government’s support for free and independent media.

“The Government is working hard to pay all funds owed to media houses to enable them pay Journalists and operate smoothly”, said Mr Koskei.

EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak  urged the media to adopt to the new media environment by acquiring multiple skills.

“In investigation of corruption and other forms of economic crimes, accurate media reporting is necessary. This therefore calls for the need for journalists to possess skillsets that will aid their work”, said Mr Mbarak.
