Fafi MP Appeals for Heightened Security in Border Constituency After Al Shabaab Attack

Bura – The National government has been called on to strengthen security measures in the border constituency of Fafi following a recent attack by suspected Al Shabaab militants.

The region has experienced a series of devastating attacks, resulting in casualties among police officers, police reservists, and civilians, along with the destruction of communication infrastructure.

Fafi Member of Parliament, Salah Yakub on Wednesday made the appeal while visiting Yumbis, where he went to offer condolences to the grieving family of Abdirashid Hassan Hanshi. Mr. Hanshi tragically lost his life in an attack carried out by the suspected militants.

Mr. Salah Yakub meets local residents in Yumbis.

The incident took place on September 26 involving armed militants invasion of the home of Yumbis Chief, Yakub Kusow Hanshi, at 3 am, underlining the severity of the security situation.

During the attack, the militants inquired about the chief’s wife’s whereabouts, according to locals while instilling fear and insecurity among the residents.

Speaking to the press, a visibly angry Yakub said that his numerous appeals to the state to beef up security by deploying more security and recruiting more National Police Reservists have not been successful.

Mr. Yakub said the militants seem to be operating with impunity, carrying out terror attacks and kidnappings unchecked. He emphasized the urgency of halting this alarming trend.

Some schools and hospitals in the constituency have been closed as some roads remain unpassable due to insecurity.

“Let us also have more Police reservists recruited. More administrative units opened so that assistant chiefs could be recruited so that they could provide intelligence to the security apparatus. We also need to have more informers recruited with some stipend so as to motivate them. But above all we need more special forces camps spread across the constituency,” he said.

The border constituency of Fafi has become a hotspot for such attacks, with security forces and innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.

“Additionally, the destruction of communication masts has further hampered efforts to maintain law and order in the area,” said Yakub, the area member of parliament.

He has reiterated need for heightened security to address growing concerns of the community regarding the deteriorating security situation.

“Residents are increasingly fearful for their safety, and the continued attacks threaten the stability of the region,” he said.
