Federal Government of Somalia, AFRICOM target al Shabaab

Stuttgart – In response to the Federal Government of Somalia’s request, U.S. Africa Command executed a collective self-defense airstrike involving two engagements against the al Shabaab terrorist group on January 21.

The strike took place in a remote area of Somalia, approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Kismayo. 

Initial assessments indicate the airstrike resulted in the elimination of three al Shabaab terrorists, with no reported injuries or casualties among civilians.

U.S. Africa Command will continually evaluate the strike’s outcomes and share additional information as deemed appropriate. Operational security considerations preclude the release of specific details regarding units and assets involved.

Recognized as the largest and most active al-Qaeda network globally, al Shabaab poses a persistent threat to U.S. forces and interests. U.S. 

Africa Command, in collaboration with its partners, remains committed to preventing this terrorist group from orchestrating attacks on civilians.

Given Somalia’s significance in East Africa’s security landscape, U.S. Africa Command will persist in training, advising, and equipping partner forces to effectively counter al Shabaab.
