Kenya Police have recovered a cache of firearms and ammunition from four suspects in Nuno area, Garissa County.

The operation was conducted on Sunday officers from elite Border Police Unit of the Police Service.

Four AK-47 assault riffles, over 540 rounds of 7.62x39mm calibre, machetes, ballistic helmets, military fatigues among other weapons were recovered from the four suspects.

“The recovery followed intelligence reports from members of the public who notified the officers based at Modika Camp, of the four suspicious men who were in a white Toyota probox registration number KDL 610A,” said the Police in statement.

The four have been identified as Osman Yussuf Gure, 40, Ali Farah Dagane, 39, Ahmed Mohamed Gedi, 29 and Abdullahi Ali Omar, 38.

Detectives are yet to establish the mission of the four suspects who were armed with the deadly arsenal.

They are currently being grilled at a safe house in Garissa.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has commended the swift action by the officers based at Modika location, “as the weapons would have had a devastating effect had they been used against innocent civilians.”

They are expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday.

Police Communication Change

The four men who were Sunday arrested while carrying four rifles, 19 magazines and 500 bullets are not terrorists, police said Monday.

They are members of the National Police Reserve based at the Kenya-Somalia border in Wajir County.

A senior police officer said they have been helping local police in detecting and fighting al-Shabaab militants who cross from Somalia for a mission.

Officials aware of the developments said the four were arrested Sunday, April 30 after they travelled to Garissa without notifying the local security teams.

They were arrested at Nuno, Garissa County.

Police said they also recovered balaclavas, a ballistic helmet, a knife, a machete and several mobile phones from the four.
