IG Japhet Koome, the Inspector General of Police, has commenced a three-day security assessment tour of Baringo County in response to the escalating wave of banditry attacks across several regions including Isiolo, Samburu, and Meru Counties.
Addressing members of the press at the Kabarnet County Police Headquarters, the IG emphasized that bandits must either halt their activities or be prepared to face the full extent of the law.
IG Koome who was speaking on Tuesday said the government is committed to restoring peace and security in affected areas.
The Police Chief convened a consultative meeting with the esteemed Governor of Baringo County, Benjamin Cheboi, at the County Headquarters.
Their collaborative effort aims to unify approach towards addressing the security challenges plaguing the region.
IG Koome visited Chemolingot, the Joint Police-Military Operation Centre, as part of the ongoing Operation Maliza Uhalifu aimed at combating banditry across six Counties, including Baringo.
The declaration of these areas as “Disturbed and Dangerous” underscores the severity of the situation and the urgent need for intervention.
Operation Maliza Uhalifu, initiated last year, has yielded substantial progress in curbing the banditry menace. The restoration of normalcy, the reopening of schools, and the recovery of over 11,000 stolen livestock and more than 100 illicit firearms are notable achievements attributed to this operation.
He commended the tireless efforts of the multi-agency security team operating in the areas.
Mr. Koome praised their dedication in safeguarding communities and urged NPS Officers to maintain political neutrality in their service to the nation.
He called for impartiality and underscored the importance of upholding professionalism and integrity within the law enforcement fraternity.
Operation Maliza Uhalifu is a government-led security initiative aimed at combating criminal activities, particularly banditry, in specific regions of Kenya.
It involves coordinated efforts between security agencies to dismantle criminal networks, conduct targeted patrols and raids, and engage with communities in six counties.
The operation has led to significant reductions in crime rates and improved security conditions in affected areas, but challenges remain, including resource limitations and concerns about human rights.
