In Memoriam: Khadijo Mohamed Diriye – A Trailblazer in Somali Politics

Djibouti – Today, Somalia mourns the loss of a distinguished political figure, Khadijo Mohamed Diriye, who passed away in Djibouti after a brief illness. She leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service and contributions to the nation.

Mrs. Khadija was until her death serving as the Minister of Women and Human Rights Development following her appointment to cabinet by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and Somali people on the shocking death of the veteran member of parliament and Minister. She had been in politics since 2000 and held various ministerial positions.

Khadijo Mohamed Diriye, known for her impactful roles in Somali politics, served as the Minister of Women and Human Rights from January 2014 to January 2015. Later, she assumed the position of Minister of Youth and Sports in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire as of March 2017.

Appointed by Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed in January 2014, Diriye assumed the role of Minister of Women and Human Rights, succeeding Maryam Qassim. During her tenure, she attended a global summit on women in London in June 2014, representing the Federal Government of Somalia. At the summit, she showcased the government’s national action plan against sexual violence, a crucial initiative launched in collaboration with regional administrations and civil society groups.

Diriye’s commitment to human rights was evident in August 2014 when she announced the completion of a new national action plan on human rights. She played a pivotal role in synchronizing Somalia’s laws with regional and international human rights instruments, including the ratification of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

As Minister of Women and Human Rights, Diriye spearheaded a public awareness campaign in Mogadishu in December 2014, emphasizing the importance of human rights and citizen participation in ensuring their protection. Her efforts culminated in the finalization of legislation for a new Human Rights Commission bill.

Khadijo Mohamed Diriye will be remembered not only for her significant contributions to women’s rights and human rights but also for her unwavering dedication to building a better Somalia. Her passing leaves a void in the political landscape, and her memory will continue to inspire future generations of Somali leaders.
