Kenya Conducts Comprehensive Health Facility Assessment Towards Universal Health Coverage

Machakos – County Governments, Development Partners and the Ministry of Health are collaborating to undertake a Harmonized Health Facility Assessment (HHFA) spanning 3,603 health facilities.

The initiative, supported by Data for Impact, involves training research associates, quality control measures, logistics support, and data analysis to enhance the evaluation of community health services across 47 counties.

Data collected will help shed light on critical aspects such as health service availability, quality of care, facility management, equity in resource allocation, and the accessibility and affordability of medicines. The comprehensive assessment is instrumental in identifying areas for improvement as Kenya progresses towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Launched in Machakos on Monday, the assessment aligns with Kenya’s commitment to preventive healthcare and strengthening primary healthcare services.

The evaluation aims to assess service quality, identify barriers, gauge health worker readiness, ensure adherence to standards, and gather patient experiences.

The Ministry of Health, together with development partners, anticipates that the findings will guide strategic planning at both national and county levels, contributing positively to the journey towards UHC.

The initiative has several objectives, including providing essential information for decision-making on investments needed for delivering the essential health package, generating evidence to support national and county UHC roadmaps, and addressing critical data gaps in health service availability and readiness.

The data will support in planning and managing health systems, as well as establishing accountability and potential financial resources for each health facility, ensuring sustainability and continued monitoring mechanisms for service availability and readiness.

Kenya is advancing its commitment to Universal Health Coverage, an initiative standing as a crucial step in shaping the nation’s healthcare landscape.
