Khalid Abdirizak Takes Garissa on a Literary Journey with ‘Tentacles of Bliss

Garissa Township – Garissa recently witnessed a literary celebration of substantial scale as Khalid Abdirizak launched his debut novel, “Tentacles of Bliss.” The official launch of the book drew together an eclectic gathering of literature enthusiasts, friends, political leaders, community figures, and fellow authors at a local hotel on Saturday.

Hailing from Garissa, Khalid Abdirizak joins a distinguished group of talented authors from the county who have contributed richly to the literary world through both fiction and nonfictional works. In an exclusive conversation with Garissa Today, Abdirizak shed light on the inspiration behind his literary venture and the broader impact he hopes to achieve.

Embarking on a Literary Journey: Khalid Abdirizak’s “Tentacles of Bliss”

Abdirizak said he had longstanding desire to write a book, noting that it had been a latent talent and a calling within him. His passion, even during high school, was to narrate the stories unique to their community. “I have always wanted to write a book. It has been a talent and a calling in me,” Abdirizak expressed.

He explained that “Tentacles of Bliss” delves into the sensitive issues of human trafficking and forbidden affairs were the themes he choose for the novel. 

Reflecting on the experience of launching his book in Garissa, Abdirizak described it as “one of its kind” and highlighted its success, surpassing his expectations. The event gave him the momentum needed for his first book launch and also presented a challenge to keep writing, fueled by the overwhelming support from friends and book lovers.

“It was truly unique. The event not only met but exceeded my expectations. It provided the momentum and courage I required, especially considering it was my inaugural book launch,” he said. 

“Despite the initial nervousness, the convergence of friends and book enthusiasts gave me a sense of exhilaration and presented a challenge to persist in my writing endeavors,” Abdirizak said in an interview with Garissa Today.

He envisions that his book will contribute to the ongoing literary discussions within the local community by narrating their own stories. 

“The book recounts our personal narrative, shedding light on a societal issue that has deeply impacted us. While the pursuit of an improved life and alleviating poverty is promoted, it is strongly advised that we adhere to legal avenues in achieving these goals,” he said.

Abdirizak revealed offered his writing process encompasses various stages, frequently necessitating sacrifices such as skipping meals and enduring prolonged hours.

“At times I am forced to miss my meals and stay longer hours writing. I stay awake overnight so much so that I achieve my objectives,” said Mr. Abdirizak.

Conquering the initial apprehension that his ideas might face resistance, he garnered support from colleagues and leaders, reinforcing the significance of his narrative.

“Coming from a society that does not foster education and the concept of reading, I was afraid that my idea will not be welcomed. However, I was proven wrong when my preamble was supported by dozen of colleagues and the leaders as well. That brought a smile on my face.”

He added “I crafted this narrative with the purpose of advising, enlightening, and cautioning our community about the perils of immigration and the complexities associated with human trafficking.”

The launch marked a great milestone to celebrate literary excellence, Abdirizak applauded the support received, emphasizing the significance of fostering such literary events in local communities. 

He expressed pride in the community’s enthusiastic embrace of reading, laying the groundwork for future literary endeavors.

As readers engage with “Tentacles of Bliss,” Abdirizak hopes they find Farah’s character compelling and thought-provoking, emphasizing the desire to achieve and the risks involved in Farah’s journey of human trafficking.

Abdirizak hinted at many upcoming projects and themes, marking this as the initial step in a journey of literary appreciation. 

“Perhaps, this is the start of many books that I am planning to pen down. This is the first step towards the journey of literary appreciation,” he told this writer.

The novelist encouraged aspiring authors, emphasizing the need for more writers and the importance of competing with other regions to bear the mark of literary excellence.

“We need more writers, perhaps a block that will spearhead our literature journey. I also wish to tell them that writing is not as hard as people view.”

The launch of “Tentacles of Bliss” in Garissa marks a significant achievement for Abdirizak but also symbolizes the beginning of a new chapter in the literary landscape of the community with the event fostering a culture of appreciation and celebration for the written word.

He encouraged Somali authors to engage in competition with counterparts from different regions, striving to uphold the standard of literary excellence.

The event showcasing support for literature in the region was graced by Garissa Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane Abdi and Garissa Township MP Maj(Rtd) Dekow M. Barrow, along with Former Ambassador Mohammed Shidiye, Members of County Assembly, and County Executive Committee Members (CEC).
