Leaders to fundraise for IEBC official whose leg was amputated during Wajir election day shooting

Wajir county Speaker Abdille Yussuf has unveiled coordination and management of fundraising campaign for Mohamed Ahmed Kanyare, including reaching out to potential donors and managing donations received.

He led senior Degodia community leaders on Sunday at a Hotel in Nairobi to discuss support for the official who suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds at the Eldas Constituency Development Fund (CDF) offices on August 10.

Mr. Abdille called on well-wishers to contribute towards Kanyere’s medical expenses and support him through his recovery.

“We hope that the campaign will be a success and that Kanyere will receive the necessary medical attention to get back on his feet,” he said.

Mr. Kanyare, the presiding officer was at the Towheed polling centre in Elnur Tula Tula ward, Eldas constituency when he was shot by unknown persons on Election Day leading to the amputation of his leg.

The elections were aborted on August 9 after chaos erupted following a dispute on how the electoral agency had hired presiding officers and their deputies.

The situation prompted Prof Abdi Gulie, a member of the IEBC, to fly to Eldas and resolve the standoff so that voting could start the following day.

Twelve community leaders chaired by Maalim Ali Suley have been selected to spearhead efforts to cover his medical expenses.

Mohamed Nyota will serve as the secretary of the twelve member committee tasked with helping recovery of the 32-year-old man.

Others members of the committee are Mohamed Abdi Baqay, Dr. Omar Jibril, Haji Abdikadir, Elyas Sheikh Abdinoor, Haji Mohamud Hassan, Dr. Mohamed Abass, Elyas Maalim, Eng Musa, Haji Abdullahi Qatata and Yusuf Muhumed.

“We aspire the campaign will be a success and that Kanyere will receive the necessary medical attention to get back on his feet,” said a communique after the family gathered in Nairobi.

The technical committee said the fundraising agenda for Mohamed Ahmed Kanyere is a noble cause that deserves the support of the entire community.

They have committed themselves to support Mr. Kanyare through the difficult time. The act has been commended and they are calling on well-wishers to contribute towards Kanyere’s medical expenses and his recovery journey.

The vote-tallying, which ended prematurely at the CDF offices, was consequently moved to the safer Wajir Town.

The incumbent Eldas MP, Adan Keynan of Jubilee Party, was declared the winner of the parliamentary election.

He defeated ODM’s Adan Boray, who got 6,838 votes against Keynan’s 7,517.
