MP Umulkheir Harun Advocates for Reform in Education Funding Allocation

Nominated MP Calls for Reform in Education Funding Allocation

Umulkheir Harun, a nominated member of the National Assembly, has voiced support for the proposal to remove scholarships from the office of MPs.

Mrs. Harun, a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in a statement on Friday noted concerns over insufficient funds to adequately support free education, especially for students in technical fields.

“It is also ironical for MPs to oversight funds they manage. NG CDF can handle development and leave education to be free,” she said.

She suggested that the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG CDF) should focus on development projects, leaving education to be provided freely.

Mrs. Harun expressed reservations about the personal management of NGAAF and CDF funds by some members, noting challenges in bursary disbursement and potential misuse for political purposes.

She advocated for a shift towards free education under the Ministry, underscoring the need for transparency and effectiveness in educational funding distribution.

The Government last year announced increased bursaries under the Constituencies Development Fund to ensure smooth learning.

This followed the signing into law of The National Government Constituencies Development Fund (Amendment) Bill by President William Ruto.

The law increases the allocation from 35 per cent to 40 per cent, a move that will facilitate continuity and completion of education by students.

The additional funds will also cater for school feeding programmes, especially in drought-stricken areas.
