President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud Expresses Gratitude for Eritrea’s Support in Anti-Terror Efforts

Asmara  –  President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud told Eri-TV that ties between Somalia and Eritrea remain strong on during an interview with the state media at the end of a two day official visit to the country on Tuesday.

President Hassan thanked Asmara for the support it has accorded Mogadishu in the fight against terrorism, particularly against the militant group al-Shabaab.

The Somali government in 2019 dispatched approximately 5,000 soldiers for training, focusing on skill development in the navy and air force. Additionally, other personnel also underwent training to enhance expertise in infantry and various mechanized military capabilities and have returned home.

Since their return, the officers have been actively contributing to the security efforts in Mogadishu and participating in the offensive against Al-Shabaab.

They are anticipated to play a crucial role in assuming security responsibilities for Somalia as the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) soldiers prepare to exit by the end of the year.

President Mohamud expressed gratitude for Eritrea’s consistent backing, stating that Eritrea has played a significant role in preserving Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

He said his delegation and the visit was aimed at briefing President Isaias Afwerki about the evolving dynamics in the region, as well as discussions to continue collaboration and information-sharing.

The Somali leader acknowledged the volatility of the region and underscored the importance of Eritrea’s support in countering the challenges posed by extremist groups. He reiterated that Eritrea’s stance aligns with the international community’s position on safeguarding Somalia’s stability.

“Eritrea has been in support of preserving the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Somalia and that is it’s international position,” said President Hassan.

The visit comes after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the President of Somaliland Muse Bihe Abdi last week signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Addis Ababa for Partnership and Cooperation, between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Somaliland, is intended to serve as a framework for the multisectoral partnership between the two sides.

The Memorandum of Understanding was to pave the way to realize the aspiration of Ethiopia to secure access to the sea and diversify its access to seaports.

The Somali government nullified what it called an ‘unauthorized Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)’ between the Government of Ethiopia and Somaliland.

President Mohamud said he will safeguard the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia in accordance with international law.

He has since signed a bill passed by a bicameral Somali parliament session outlawing the agreement that Villa Somalia said is a violation of the country’s national interests and international legal principles.
