President Mohamud Nullifies Illegitimate MoU Between Ethiopoa and Somaliland

Mogadishu – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia has taken decisive action by signing a law that nullifies an unauthorized Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Ethiopia and Somaliland. The move, announced by President Mohamud on Sunday is aimed at safeguarding its unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity in accordance with international law.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the President of Somaliland Muse Bihe Abdi last week signed a

Memorandum of Understanding in Addis Ababa for Partnership and Cooperation, between the Federal

Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Somaliland, is intended to serve as a framework for the

multisectoral partnership between the two sides.

The Memorandum of Understanding was to pave the way to realize the aspiration of Ethiopia to secure access to the sea and diversify its access to seaports.

President Hassan Sheikh, accompanied by leadership of the two legislative assemblies of the Federal Government of Somalia thanked the collective support received from lawmakers and citizens alike for this crucial step. 

The signed law is positioned as a clear illustration of Somalia’s commitment to upholding its national interests and international legal principles.

The nullification of the MoU shows the government’s stance against any agreements that compromise Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity without proper authorization. 

According to Suleiman Said, President Mohamud’s action signifies a resolute response to unauthorized diplomatic engagements and reaffirms the nation’s adherence to international legal standards.

“This development is expected to have implications for diplomatic relations in the Horn of Africa and emphasizes Somalia’s determination to assert its rights in accordance with established international norms,” he said. 

Said said the nullification of this MoU stands as a testament to Somalia’s commitment to preserving its national unity and sovereignty.
