Renewed Hope for Garissa Student as NG-CDF Promises Funding for Nursing Studies

Garissa Township legislator Maj (Rtd) Dekow M. Barrow has intervened to bring hope to Sumeya Hassan’s pursuit of her dream of becoming a nurse.

Sumeya, who showed remarkable improvement in her secondary studies by securing a B- grade in December 2022, faced a roadblock in her aspirations due to financial constraints.

Despite her academic success, Sumeya found herself unable to enroll in nursing school.

Maj (Rtd) Barrow on Sunday stepped in to alleviate her burden by assuring her that the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) Garissa Township will cover her studies at NEP School of Health Services.

Sumeya had previously appealed for support from generous contributors to help her pursue her studies and uplift her family’s circumstances.

Responding to a news article highlighting Sumeya’s predicament, Maj (Rtd) Barrow expressed uncertainty about whether Sumeya had applied for a bursary last year when the NG-CDF disbursed approximately 1 million shillings to the school. Nevertheless, he urged her to apply, assuring her that her fees would be covered.

“We are launching our bursary for this year for colleges this week,” Maj (Rtd) Barrow assured Garissa Today.

The NG-CDF bursary fund disbursement of ksh 48 million for Garissa Township Constituency was launched in May 2023 at Garissa Secondary National School, providing assistance to 5000 students across various secondary schools, colleges, and universities.

Maj (Rtd) Barrow spearheaded the digitization of the application process for NG-CDF bursaries, making it more accessible to students after securing Garissa Township seat.

Through an online platform created by the Garissa Township Member of Parliament, students can easily apply for education bursaries, streamlining the process and reducing stress for applicants.

With the backing of legislative initiatives, Sumeya’s dream of embarking on a nursing career is once again within her reach.
