Ten Years of Action: Khatra Haji Mowlid Champions the Fight Against FGM in Wajir

Wajir – Khatra Haji Mowlid, a staunch advocate against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), joined survivors and fellow human rights defenders to commemorate ten years of activism in Wajir on Tuesday.

Despite notable progress, Mowlid acknowledged the persistent prevalence of FGM, especially in cases where it persists in over 90 percent of instances in Wajir.

As the Founder and CEO of the Community Based Organization Women Organizing Women Networking, she remains committed to challenging deep-rooted traditions associated with FGM.

Facing resistance from her community and cultural leaders in Northeastern Region, Mowlid emphasized the necessity of proactive measures to combat this harmful practice, despite the existence of the FGM Act criminalizing and penalizing FGM.

Through awareness campaigns, Know Your Rights initiatives, and collective efforts, stakeholders in Wajir are making strides in reducing FGM cases, although the fight continues to completely eliminate the practice.

Mowlid called for sustained efforts and strengthened implementation of anti-FGM laws for the well-being of girls and women in Wajir and beyond.
