Ahead of anticipated upcoming April rains, Wajir County has initiated on an agricultural development endeavor spearheaded by Governor Ahmed Muhumed.
The initiative launched on Tuesday included the launch of four state-of-the-art farm tractors, an excavator, a loader, and various essential farm implements.
Governor Abdullahi said the program is critical and the strategic investments will fortify production capabilities to ensure food security across the community.
He recognizing agriculture as a cornerstone of the county’s economy and a vital source of livelihood for many.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering local farmers with the necessary tools and resources for success,” he said.
The initiative also aims to increase food output and amplify yields while reinforcing the familial backbone of farming communities.
Under the plan, the county aims to boost productivity by providing support and resources to the local agricultural workforce.
Governor Abdullahi expressed immense pride in leading this effort to enhance the resilience of farming households.
“Through collaborative efforts and unwavering support for farmers, Wajir County is poised to achieve greater prosperity and self-sufficiency in agriculture.”
Wajir County has a diverse agricultural capability despite being predominantly arid and semi-arid. The region’s agricultural potential is primarily focused on livestock farming, including the rearing of camels, goats, sheep, and cattle, which are well-suited to the dry conditions.
Additionally, there are efforts to cultivate drought-resistant crops such as sorghum, millet, and maize.
To overcome the challenges posed by the arid climate, Wajir County has been investing in innovative agricultural practices and technologies.
This includes the adoption of water harvesting techniques, such as building sand dams and earth pans, to capture and store rainwater for irrigation during dry periods.
The County faces challenges due to its arid climate, its agricultural capability is steadily improving through investments in infrastructure, technology, and capacity building, with a focus on enhancing food security and livelihoods for its residents.
