British Citizens Advised to Exercise Caution and Avoid Specific Areas in North Eastern

Nairobi – The United Kingdom has issued a travel warning for its citizens in Kenya, urging them to exercise caution and avoid certain regions due to heightened security concerns.

The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) released a new alert on its terrorism section, advising against non-essential travel to specific areas within Kenya. The UK embassy in Kenya warning specifically focused on regions within 60 kilometers of Kenya’s border with Somalia. The new advisory is in response to the ongoing threat posed by the militant Islamist group, al-Shabaab.

The FCDO further cautioned British nationals against non-essential travel to eastern Garissa County and Mandera County, excluding Mandera West sub-county. Additionally, areas in Lamu County, except for Lamu Island and Manda Island, are to be avoided.

The advisory also extends to Tana River County, specifically areas north of the Tana River and within 15 kilometers of the coast between the Tana River and the Galana (Athi-Galana-Sabaki) River.

These regions have experienced a higher frequency of terrorist attacks linked to the Al-Qaeda affiliate militants al-Shabaab who often targeting Kenyan security forces, government installations, as well as soft targets such as hotels and transportation hubs.

British nationals, the advisory noted, “are reminded that their travel insurance could be invalidated if they choose to travel against FCDO advice.”
