Kenya and Tanzania Overcome Disputes, Resume Air Links

Nairobi – Authorities in Kenya have granted the Fifth Freedom Traffic Right to Air Tanzania Company Limited, following an official request from the United Republic of Tanzania on Tuesday.

The Fifth Freedom Traffic Right allows Air Tanzania Company Limited to operate all-cargo services, marking a pivotal step in strengthening the aviation ties between the two East African nations.

The authorities counter part in the United Republic of Tanzania meanwhile withdrew an earlier decision prohibiting Kenya Airways from operating Third and Fourth Freedom Traffic Rights between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, effective immediately.

The Director-General of the aeronautical authorities of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hamza S. Johari, said stakeholders and the public will benefit from increased options, improved cargo services, and a more interconnected East Africa.

“This move underscores the significance of maintaining open channels of communication and collaboration in the dynamic field of international aviation,” he said.

“The aeronautical authorities on both sides look forward to a future of continued collaboration, fostering stronger bonds in the skies above the vibrant East African region,” Hamza added.

This reciprocal adjustment followed diplomatic efforts by East African states shows the flexibility and cooperation within the EAC aviation landscape. The restoration of traffic rights for Kenya Airways now ensures uninterrupted connectivity and reinforces the commitment to diplomatic solutions in the realm of aeronautical affairs.

Air Tanzania’s expansion presents opportunities for enhanced trade, connectivity, and logistical efficiency, aligning with broader regional cooperation goals.

Tanzania on Monday withdrew approval for Kenyan national carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) to operate flights between the Kenyan capital Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania said the decision was taken in retaliation for Kenya’s denial of rights to Tanzania national carrier Air Tanzania to operate cargo flights between the two countries.

Kenya is leading and main tourist sources among African countries for Tanzania which offers best natural and other attractions in the world but wide sections of the global travel market are still unaware of those attractions.

The recent clash between Tanzania and Kenya adds to the increasing trade and commercial disputes within the East African Community (EAC), a regional bloc functioning as a customs union. Prior to this, Kenya has raised concerns about the influx of inexpensive products from Uganda, leading to the blocking of certain items like milk and sugar, sparking protests from Kampala. Additionally, landlocked Uganda has taken Kenya to a regional court over a disagreement related to the importation of petroleum products.

Despite being a smaller airline, Air Tanzania has been actively seeking expansion in recent years. Authorities have been working to grow its fleet, routes, and overall operations, aiming to secure a larger share of revenues in the region’s aviation business.
