Egypt Emphasizes Respect for Somalia’s Sovereignty Amid Regional Concerns

Cairo – The Arab Republic of Egypt has extended support and underscored the critical importance of fully respecting the unity and sovereignty of the sisterly Federal Republic of Somalia over its entire territory.

Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it firmly opposes any measures that could undermine Somali sovereignty, emphasizing the exclusive right of Somalia and its people to benefit from their resources on Wednesday.

Expressing deep concern over the escalating official movements, procedures, and statements issued by regional and international actors, Egypt said the actions could threaten to stability in the Horn of Africa.

The African continent is grappling with increased conflicts and collaborative efforts have been utilized for resolution and containment.

Egypt reiterated the need to adhere to the objectives of the Constitutive Law of the African Union, particularly the defense of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of member states.

“The principles of the Union stress the importance of respecting existing borders upon achieving independence and refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of other member states,” said the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It has called Ethiopia to commit it’s values and principles of cooperation and joint action. It has urged nations to work together to achieve regional interests.

The statement sent to newsrooms said avoidance of unilateral measures could heighten tension and expose the interests and national security of regional countries to risks and threats.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pledged to promote stability, cooperation, and the well-being of the peoples in the region, urging responsible diplomatic engagement to address the challenges at hand.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia while addressing a bicameral House of Parliament strongly opposed the recent agreement between Ethiopia and Somaliland, allowing access to the Red Sea on Tuesday.

Dr. Hassan labeled it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty, asserting that the deal lacks legal basis and should not be enforced.

“What happened in Addis Ababa yesterday, 1st January, violates international laws and regulations and shouldn’t be enforced,” declared President Mohamud.

Tension between Somalia and Ethiopia remain high, with President Mohamud urging a reconsideration of the actions that could potentially destabilize the region and compromise hard-fought gains against terrorism.
