Somalia Disputes IGAD Statement on Ethiopia Relations, Calls for Apology

Mogadishu – The Federal Government of Somalia has expressed deep dissatisfaction and disappointment in response to the recent statement from Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), regarding the relations between Somalia and Ethiopia.

In a strongly-worded rebuke, the Federal Government of Somalia on Wednesday contended that the IGAD statement falls short of condemning what they perceive as the Ethiopian Government’s violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Somali authorities in a statement to the media argued that such actions contradict fundamental principles outlined by the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), IGAD, and other international laws.

The Federal Government of Somalia said it has issues with the content of the IGAD Executive Secretary’s statement, asserting that it appears to favor the Ethiopian Government.

Somalia has called upon Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu to issue an immediate apology, withdraw the statement, and take appropriate action to rectify what they see as a biased stance.

Despite the tensions, the Federal Government of Somalia emphasizes its commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
