IGAD Executive Secretary Urges Peaceful Resolution in Ethiopia-Somalia Relations

Djibouti – Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), has voiced deep concern over the recent developments in relations between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS). 

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Wednesday, he emphasized the potential implications for regional stability and highlights IGAD’s commitment to monitoring the situation closely.

He was responding to the escalating tensions between the two African nations. Dr. Gebeyehu has called upon IGAD leaders to address the matter urgently. 

He urged both Ethiopia and Somalia, described as “sisterly countries,” to collaborate towards a peaceful and amicable resolution. 

The Executive Secretary further emphasized the importance of upholding shared values that unite the IGAD family.

IGAD noted it’s dedication to fostering peace, stability, cooperation, and regional integration, remains steadfast in its commitment to these principles. 

The statement from the regional body underlines the critical need for diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions and prevent any further deterioration of the situation.

“The regional implications of strained Ethiopia-Somalia relations are of great concern to IGAD, and the organization is keen on playing a constructive role in facilitating dialogue,” it said. 

Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu has appealed for promotion of a united front in the face of challenges that threaten regional stability.
