Details on the Arrest of the Eastleigh Shooting and Robbery Suspect in Mombasa

A suspect linked to the shooting and robbery of over Sh3.9 million in Eastleigh, Nairobi, was apprehended in Mombasa.

The individual was tracked to the coastal city and apprehended while awaiting to purchase a car for personal use, according to police reports.

Detectives leading the investigation stated they are actively seeking additional suspects involved in the attack that left a 26-year-old victim severely injured with gunshot wounds on March 30.

The victim reported the robbery of $30,000 (Sh3,969,726) to the police. Authorities familiar with the investigation disclosed to the Star Newspaper that the arrested suspect was identified at the scene of the robbery.

He has been transported to Nairobi as the search for his accomplices continues. It remains uncertain whether any of the stolen cash has been recovered.

“We have a suspect who is being brought to Nairobi. He was attempting to purchase a car in Mombasa using some of the stolen cash,” said an official familiar with the investigation.

The assailants, riding on a motorbike, targeted Adan Ali Mohamed, who was also on a motorcycle along Eastleigh’s Muratina street.

The incident occurred on Saturday, March 30, at 11 am, in a busy area, captured by security cameras.

The gunman, riding pillion, approached the victim, demanding the bag containing the cash. When Adan hesitated, he was shot at close range in the neck, sustaining serious injuries.

The perpetrator swiftly grabbed the cash, fleeing on the waiting motorcycle.

Adan, intending to deposit the money at a nearby bank, discovered it was closed upon arrival, opting to ride a boda boda for convenience, unaware that he was being trailed by the assailants.

The stolen cash, proceeds from two days’ sales of oil products, belonged to his employer operating in the area.

As Adan reached the Bulsho car wash on Muratina Street, the perpetrator intercepted him, snatching the cash wrapped in green paper and escaping the scene.

Adan was promptly rushed to Health Gate Hospital for treatment, while police launched an investigation into the incident.

Starehe police boss Fred Abuga reiterated the commitment to apprehending the perpetrators and urged property owners to install surveillance cameras to enhance security in the area.

Police are also exploring the possibility of insider involvement in the incident, as security concerns persist in Eastleigh’s rapidly growing community.
