Garissa County Allocates 50 Million for Upgrading and Fencing of Waberi Open Dumpsite
Garissa – In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the Garissa County Assembly has approved an allocation of 50 million Kenyan shillings for the upgrading and fencing of the Waberi open dumpsite.
The decision comes after years of concerns raised by residents and environmental activists about the site’s impact on the local ecosystem and public health, Abubakar Sugow, the member of the County Assembly representing the Wagberi Ward has confirmed.
Mr. Sugow while speaking on Sunday said the first step in the upgrade process involves addressing environmental nuisances such as odor, dust, and the infestation of vermin and birds.
The allocated funds will be utilized during the 2023-2024 fiscal year.
With the allocated funds in the current financial year, Garissa County aims to establish a controlled waste management system that adheres to environmental standards.
To achieve these improvements, Garissa Municipality aims to take control of all operations at the dumpsite.
“This will include inspecting and recording incoming waste, monitoring the tipping front, compacting waste, and applying soil cover,” the MCA said.
Garissa Today has learnt site will also be fenced, and Garissa County enforcement security personnel will be deployed to control scavenging, monitor vehicles, prevent the entry of stray animals, and eliminate open burning.
The decision to upgrade and fence the Waberi open dumpsite is a crucial step towards addressing the environmental and public health concerns associated with open dumping.
The site has long been a source of distress for residents, who have endured the foul odors and potential health hazards caused by the unregulated disposal of waste.
A strict monitoring and enforcement measures will be initiated by the county authorities to mitigate the negative impact of the dumpsite on the surrounding environment.
