Raila Odinga Calls for Protests Against President Ruto’s Tax Measures

Nairobi – In a bold move, Azimio leader Raila Odinga has announced a day of protests on Friday, July 7th, to express opposition to President William Ruto’s recently unveiled tax measures.

Speaking at a public event in Kisumu on Sunday, Odinga urged Kenyans to unite and demonstrate their disapproval of what he claims is an encroachment of executive power into parliament.

Odinga labeled the Finance Act of 2023 as oppressive and warned that it would only burden ordinary Kenyans by driving up the cost of living.

He criticized elected members of parliament, alleging that they had been compromised and were no longer representing the interests of the people.

“The government seems determined to impose these taxes on us by force, and that is why we say no taxation without representation,” Odinga exclaimed.

Meanwhile, despite a court order issued last Friday, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) proceeded with the implementation of new fuel prices, drawing criticism from opposition leaders who view the move as a blatant disregard for the court’s ruling.

As tensions rise, Kenyans eagerly anticipate Friday’s protests, which are expected to serve as a forceful expression of public dissent against the government’s financial policies.

The opposition aim to convey their demands for accountability and fair representation in shaping the country’s economic future.
