Garissa county projects to drill new boreholes in partnership with world bank 

The County Government of Garissa in partnership with Horn of Africa Groundwater for Resilience Regional Program will implement drilling of boreholes in Garissa county.

The project fosters cooperation with Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), who will work together to tap into the region’s largely untapped groundwater resources to cope with and adapt to drought and other climate stressors impacting their vulnerable borderlands.

Officials from the organization today paid a courtesy call to GaryGovernor Nathif  Jama at his office, where they discussed the implementation of the six year project that entails drilling of new boreholes. 

The plan also involves the rehabilitation of existing boreholes and the training of operators and water users. 

The Governor said the project was inline with his manifesto to increase sustainable access to underground water in Garissa County. 

He said long term resilience building  was essential to reduce the perennial shortage of water during drought.

Mr. Jama added that Garissa was endowed with a vast arable dryland with potential to increase food production in the county. 

He appreciated the efforts by the organization to support the counties in the ASALs regions to access and manage the groundwater. 

The CEC for Water and Irrigation Ahmed Mohamed Ibrahim and Gawasco CEO Mohamed Dolal were among county officials who joined the Governor in receive the officials.
