Accelerating Economic Development in Garissa County: Key Initiatives for Sustainable Growth

Garissa, renowned for its cultural heritage and strategic location in Kenya’s Northeastern Province has witnessed economic growth, GT News has learnt. The county had a population of approximately 800,000 people in 2019.

Initiatives have been undertaken by State and Non State actors to harness the extensive economic potential within the devolved unit, promising a development trajectory for Garissa.

The county, boasting a landmass equivalent to that of Rwanda, strategically sits along major trade routes, positioning Garissa as a vibrant commercial hub.

Its strategic location facilitates the seamless trade of livestock, agriculture, and various goods both regionally and nationally.

Infrastructure development, including the largest solar project in sub-Saharan Africa has enhanced connectivity and fosters economic activity in Garissa.

Improved road networks, electricity supply, and telecommunications infrastructure have all facilitated seamless movement of goods and people. This nurtures an environment conducive to business growth.

Diversification of economic sectors, including agriculture, tourism, renewable energy, and manufacturing have expanded Garissa’s economic base and stimulates job creation.

Investments in education and skills development has in the last decade also empowered youth in the county to drive economic growth and innovation.

Promotion and advocacy for gender equality has safeguarded inclusivity in economic opportunities.

Mwalimu Baraki Osman, a teacher in Township said the county boasts a young and vibrant population with diverse skills and talents.

“Efforts to invest in education and skills development are essential in harnessing this human capital to drive economic growth,” he said.

Mwalimu Osman said initiatives such as vocational training programs, entrepreneurship support, and STEM education initiatives are equipping Garissa’s youth with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving economy.

Mrs. Hafsa Amin, a Good Governance expert said promoting gender equality and inclusivity in economic opportunities has given all members of the community contribute and benefit from Garissa’s economic development.

She underscored that , “the government support and collaboration with the private sector are key drivers of Garissa’s economic transformation.”

The County Government of Garissa, in partnership with national and international stakeholders, has implemented various initiatives to promote investment, enhance business competitiveness, and improve the overall business environment.

Government collaboration with the private sector has fueled infrastructure development, service delivery, and job creation in Garissa.

“This has created a conducive environment for sustainable economic growth,” said Mukhtar Abubakar, a resident of Wagberi.

Mr. Abubakar said the county stands at a crucial juncture in its economic development journey, with vast opportunities waiting to be unlocked.

“We need to leverage on it’s strategic location, to source for investments in infrastructure, diversifying economic sectors, harnessing human capital, and fostering collaboration between government and the private sector.”

Revenue performance reflects Garissa’s financial stability and potential for growth, with diverse revenue streams contributing to economic sustainability.

The Department of Trade, Industry, Commerce, Enterprise, and Cooperative Development’s initiatives bolster Garissa’s economy, positioning it as a hub for business development.

Business mapping for Garissa Township Sub-County has reached its completion giving room for own-source revenue and execution of efficient risk management measures.

The department aims to replicate the mapping to all sub-counties to guarantee a comprehensive economic outlook for Garissa County.

Despite challenges, Garissa’s economy remains resilient, with agriculture, industry, and service sectors driving growth and contributes to Kenya’s GDP.

With a strategic vision and concerted efforts, the local government  is on track to unlock its economic potential to emerge as a beacon of growth and development in Kenya’s Northeastern region.

In 2022, the Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) expanded by 4.8%, down from 7.6% in 2021. The growth was widespread, particularly in service-oriented sectors. However, the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing sector contracted by 1.6% due to drought conditions.

Key sectors driving growth included Financial and Insurance (12.8%), Information and Communication (9.9%), and Transportation and Storage (5.6%). Nominal GDP increased from KSh 12,027.7 billion in 2021 to KSh 13,368.3 billion in 2022.

Although agriculture remained the dominant sector, accounting for 21.2% of GDP, industry-related activities contributed 17.7%, and service activities 61.1% to the total GDP in 2022.

Private final consumption expenditure rose to KSh 10,107.2 billion, while government final consumption expenditure reached KSh 1,640.5 billion.

Gross National Income (GNI) and Gross National Disposable Income (GNDI) increased to KSh 13,163.2 billion and KSh 13,932.0 billion, respectively.

Gross domestic product per capita rose from KSh 237,861 in 2021 to KSh 260,024 in 2022.

Garissa County is predominantly inhabited by people of Somali ethnic background, including subgroups such as the Ogaden (Majority), Ajuran, Degodia, and others.

While Somali ethnic groups constitute the majority, there are also smaller populations of various other ethnicities residing in the county.

Islam stands as the dominant religion in Garissa County, with the overwhelming majority of the population adhering to the Islamic faith.

The Somali language, encompassing various dialects, is widely spoken among residents. Additionally, Swahili and English serve as languages of administration and commerce, catering to the diverse linguistic needs of the population.

Garissa County’s population primarily resides in rural areas, with smaller urban centers such as Garissa (the county headquarters), Dadaab, and Hulugho hosting the urban populace.

Agriculture, livestock farming, and trade form the backbone of the county’s economy. Rural residents predominantly engage in pastoralism, while urban dwellers are active in various trade and commercial activities.

Access to education has remain significant challenge in Garissa County, particularly in rural locales.

However, concerted efforts have been undertaken to enhance educational infrastructure and opportunities for the local populace to advance greater educational inclusivity.
