Senator Haji Vows to Address County Assembly Challenges with Legislative Measures

MCAs Express Support for Collaborative Efforts with Senate Committees

Garissa Senator Abdul Haji reiterated the importance of robust engagement with grassroots leaders to advance the county’s development agenda.

He emphasized that such interactions can expedite crucial initiatives and promote inclusivity in decision-making processes.

He was speaking during an Iftar meeting with local leaders in Garissa, Senator Haji underscored the indispensable role played by Members of the County Assemblies (MCAs) in facilitating service delivery at the grassroots level.

Mr. Haji said their role is critical in ensuring better utilization of county government resources and prioritizing projects that directly impact constituents.

Senator Haji acknowledged several challenges hindering the optimal functioning and growth of county assemblies, including the lack of financial autonomy, inadequate resource allocation, and low remuneration for MCAs.

“MCAs are instrumental in ensuring the prudent utilization of county government resources and prioritizing projects that directly impact the lives of the people they represent,” he said.

He pledged swift legislative action in the Senate to address these issues and committed to fast-tracking the enactment of necessary legislation.

“Lack of financial autonomy, inadequate resources allocated to county assemblies, and low remuneration for MCAs are some of the challenges that have hindered the growth of county assemblies,” he said.

“The Senate will fast track the enactment of necessary legislation that seeks to cure the mischief that for years has left county assemblies marginalized and underfunded.”

One proposed solution announced by Senator Haji is the establishment of a Senate Liaison Office at the Garissa County Assembly.

The office would enhance direct communication and collaboration between the assembly and the Senate, as well as facilitate capacity building initiatives for key committees.

During the gathering, Senator Haji urged leaders to uphold the spirit of devolution and work collectively towards improving governance and service delivery in Garissa County.

Hassan Geley, an MCA representing Baraki Ward, expressed his satisfaction with the proposed Senate Liaison Office and welcomed the opportunity for capacity building with Senate committees.

The leaders at the meeting pledged to enhance public participation and project supervision across the county.
