Garissa Unites Against Female Genital Mutilation on International Day of Zero Tolerance

Garissa – Community members in Garissa gathered to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) during an event held at Hyuga Girls’ Primary School, Galbet Ward, Garissa Township. 

The focus of the occasion was to advocate for the rights and dignity of every girl child.

Addressing the gathering, Madam Hawa Abdi Sahal, the County Executive Committee Member. (CECM) for Gender, Youth, and Sports, emphasized that FGM is a harmful practice violating the fundamental human rights of girls and women. 

She highlighted the physical, psychological, and emotional trauma endured by victims, underscoring the lasting impact on autonomy, health, and overall well-being.

“FGM has no place in any civilized society, and it is our collective responsibility to eradicate it,” she noted.

The celebration witnessed active participation from various stakeholders, including partners, educators, healthcare providers, community leaders, parents, and students. 

The event aimed to raise awareness and fostering a united commitment toward eliminating FGM from the fabric of the community.
