Garissa University Hosts Leadership Forum to Boost Higher Education in Northeastern Kenya

Garissa University Leaders’ Forum Charts Course for Advancing Higher Education in Northern Kenya

Garissa University convened a Leaders’ Forum aimed at advancing university education in Northeastern Kenya on Wednesday. Members of Parliament, Principal Secretaries from North Eastern, and key stakeholders from the Council and Management of Garissa University attended the conference.

The forum aimed to explore effective strategies for promoting, enhancing, and expanding university education in the region, with a focus on extending educational opportunities to Wajir and Mandera counties.

Collaborative efforts were emphasized, encompassing the development of facilities, infrastructure, and resources, with a particular emphasis on expediting ongoing projects like the New Tuition Block, Library Complex, and Administration Block.

Addressing the crucial need for tailored academic programs, the leaders highlighted the importance of responsive courses in areas such as Health Sciences, Agriculture, Law, and Engineering.

The leadership pledged support for resource mobilization efforts, seeking collaboration with County and National Governments, as well as local and global institutions.

To facilitate the university’s growth, a Master Plan is in the works, providing a conceptual layout to guide future development.

Additionally, leaders discussed the urgency of assisting financially struggling students, with a commitment to supporting students from their respective constituencies to enroll at Garissa University.

The event marked the initiation of a multi-stakeholder engagement strategy, signaling a united effort to find comprehensive solutions for university education in Northern Eastern Kenya and beyond.

A sub-committee, comprising members from the Northern Eastern Kenya Parliamentary Group, is set to spearhead this collaborative process.

The Garissa University Council and Management expressed appreciation for the leaders’ commitment and announced plans to engage with Governors and other relevant stakeholders to garner additional support for the university’s vision.
