Garissa university re-opens after indefinite closure last year

Garissa University has been re-opened following the indefinite closure of the school after a fire incident that took place in the morning of November 7.

A letter from the University’s office the Registrar Academic and Student Affairs, states learning will begin on the February, 20 upon completion of clearance of students. Clearance for students reporting to the school will be done until Sunday 16th January.

The university was closed last year after an unknown subjects initiated a fire in one of the dormitories. The fire was quickly subdued and no student was injured.

This occurred when most institutions especially high schools were under high scrutiny due to fire incidents which mostly destroyed school properties.

Garissa University which has had at least three fire incidents last year was then indefinitely closed after an emergency meeting held by the university’s Senate. This closure affected many students who were at their final years.

“I was in the last semester of a course leading to a degree in Bachelor of Economics, the indefinite closure affected my studies whereby our graduation was scheduled to be on march 2022 which was previously affected by Covid 19,” said Abdihakim Hajji in an interview with Garissa Today.

“So now it is unknown and it could be even between July and December 2022. Thus, our time has been consumed with no reason,” added Abdihakim.

Many students who were supposed to register with the university for the January intake have also been directly affected by the decision to halt studies.
