Government Introduces New Charges for ID Cards and Replacements

Nairobi – The government has announced changes in the cost of obtaining Identity Cards (IDs) for its citizens.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki revealed, starting immediately, Kenyans who are turning 18 years of age and require a new ID card will need to pay a fee of Sh1,000. This change signifies the end of the free issuance of ID cards to new adult citizens.

The ministry of interior has also increased the fees for those seeking replacements for lost or damaged IDs. The new charge for ID replacement stands at Sh2,000, marking a 20-fold increase from the previous fee of Sh100.

CS Kindiki said the changes are in accordance with Regulation 60 of the Public Finance Management (National Government) Regulations, 2015. The Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury and Economic Planning granted the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration the authority to revise charges and levies for services offered by the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services.

These new directive come as a measure to generate revenue for the government and support the cost of providing these essential identification documents.

The process of applying for initial identification cards (IDs) takes place at both the National Registration Bureau and Huduma Centres situated across the country.

National Registration Bureau offices are typically found within the premises of County Commissioners’ offices or Chiefs’ camps.

Eligibility for obtaining an identification card is granted to individuals who have reached the age of 18 or older.
