Mandera – Following escalation of tensions and violence sparked by a land dispute in Rhamu, Mandera County, local leaders have come together for a three-day peace dialogue meeting.

The aim was to restore harmony and tranquility to the once-peaceful town that had been rocked by inter-clan skirmishes.

The leaders and communities attending the consensus peace gathering have collectively committed to a cessation of hostilities and the resumption of normalcy in the region.

Governor Mohamed Khalif initiated the crucial peace meeting, drawing participation from Members of Parliament, Members of the County Assembly, security teams, elders, religious leaders, and various stakeholders. The troubles in Rhamu began in September, with tensions escalating to a frightening degree.
The town was shaken by inter-clan skirmishes that erupted on a Monday evening, as the sound of heavy gunfire echoed through the streets.
The violence left many residents in fear and turmoil, threatening lives and livelihoods.

“Immediate ceasefire, disbanding armed groups, road safety, water access, and unhindered firewood and livestock retrieval has been unanimously approved,” said Governor Khalif.

A committee to oversee reconciliation, implementation, and address emerging issues has also been formed.

“We have also agreed to establishing a damage assessment team and deferring of land disputes for resolution,” he added.

The peace dialogue meeting aimed to address the root causes of the conflict, promote understanding among different factions, and chart a course towards reconciliation.

Governor Adan Khalif emphasized on unity in Mandera, calling “for peace, schools reopening, and urge communities to commit to genuine reconciliation and lasting stability.”

The peace summit was attended by Mandera Deputy Governor Ali Maalim, Hussein Weytan (Mandera East Mp), Bashir Abdullahi (Mandera North Mp), Abdul Haro (Mandera South Mp), and Mohamed Abdikheir (Lafey Mp).
